International New Talent Competition is Taiwan’s only international competition for debut and second feature films by emerging filmmakers worldwide. Focusing on emerging directors’ potential regarding form, narrative, mastery of subjects and aesthetic style, the competition selects and introduce 10 to 12 films every year. The competition offers the Grand Prize ($600,000 NTD cash prize) and the Special Jury Prize ($300,000 NTD cash prize) selected by five juries, as well as the Audience Choice Award and Taiwan Film Critics Association Award. Submission details are available at http://bit.ly/2021TFFINTC.
International New Talent Competition has been acting as an important window for audience in Taiwan to see global emerging filmmakers and cutting-edge trends in cinema. Many directors with unique styles in the film industry have emerged from this competition, such as Nadav Lapid (director of Synonyms winning the Golden Bear at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival), Huang Hsin-yao (the director of Classmates Minus who won three major Golden Horse Awards last year) and kogonada (director of the upcoming science-fiction movie After Yang starring Colin Farrow); they all made their first try in this competition. Moreover, in last year’s competition, This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection that won the Grand Prize, Exile that won the Taiwan Film Critics Association Award, and two selected films, Song Without a Name and Scales, respectively represent Lesotho, Kosovo, Peru, and Saudi Arabia to compete for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film this year. As a carnival for films rich in diversity, the competition is an unmissable program of the annual Taipei Film Festival.
To select the most potential, audacious and innovative film works, International New Talent Competition introduces perspectives of juries with different cultural backgrounds. Film professionals invited as juries include Tran Anh Hung (winner of the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival), Ruben Östlund (winner of Palme d'Or of the Cannes Film Festival), Hamaguchi Ryusuke (director of Asako I & II in competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival) and Wanma Tsaidan (Golden Horse Award-winning director) and the renowned Japanese director Yamashita Nobuhiro to jointly select the rising stars in the global world of cinema.
